980’s to the wall
« on: December 27, 2018, 09:59:09 AM »
Looks like my 2 x 980’s are dying. After 4 years service I decided to overclocked them for a little extra performance. Seems that might have killed one or both of them as I’m now getting red spots and other odd stuff appear along with locking up.

Just in the process of testing them both (which is a major faff as drivers are seriously fussy when you add and remove the cards).

On the assumption they are both on their last legs, it might be time to throw my wallet at a 2080 ti 😁

Hey Fusion, have you tried:

Testing them individually;
Cleaning them for dust bunnies;
Considering that it might be your main PSU causing artifacts;
Different GFX drivers;

A 2080Ti is an overkill for anything less than 4K, imho. I have one. You’d be better off with a good second hand 1080 Ti, you should get a good performance boost over the standard 980.

It’s a pity I’m not over there as I have two spare 980 Ti going.

I’ve cleaned everything out (the cards themselves were totally dust free, which after 4 years is quite surprising!).

PSU is a evga 1200w platinum 2, I really hope it’s not that. But I’m currently testing the cards individually (taking a while due to drivers being fussy).

Yeah I know the 2080 ti is a bit OP, but I am wanting to go VR in 2019 so the additional horsepower will come in useful.

Hey Ax, if the 980s that you have are working, I'm willing to buy one off of you. I'm currently running a measily 750ti 2GB version, so I'm looking to upgrade.

My Gawd, the Founders Edition cost £400 less than that! Yet to try it in VR.

True, but this beast is overclockable by quite a margin.

In all honesty I agree, it’s an outrageous amount of money, but I have a built-in flaw that prevents me buying anything cheap 😬😬🙈🙈

Fingers crossed it lasts me another 4 years!!!

It is a bit insane I know. I wasnt intending to buy one for a while but my 980’s dying pushed me into it.

It better last me a good while!

If it's that powerful and over-kill -maybe we can all utilise its mighty-power somehow!

Will it generate enough heat to power an entire city? :D
