VR in Jun-2019: HP Reverb, Valve Index, Oculus Rift S
« on: June 08, 2019, 07:39:06 PM »
I considered a Valve Index, as upgrade to my Vive.
However, lotsa rave reviews about the HP Reverb especially its super high res, making cockpit instruments readable!!

Wags also posted a very very positive message about it.

Havent got VR? The go gettit!!  It totally changes DCS flying. Really!!  Bummer with 1st gen such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive is the low res, making reading instruments really hard unless u use VR Zoom. However, now the reverb is chaing that at an affordable price.

If u havent got VR. Then now order one. Really!!!

Have no problem with the Vive Pro and reading text. However, some of the labeling in the F-14 is still a bit iffy. There again, it's still iffy in 2D.

And remember guys, the greater the res you go on a HMD, PC requirements skyrocket! So much so, a RTX 2080 is a minimum for DCS in my view.

Might start looking at it more seriously now -but I am likely to let it improve further before getting it.

Do look forward to giving it a whirl one-day though. 8)

I'm thinking of the end of the year being when I might consider a punt towards VR.  Watched a great DCS related vid of the Oculus S and the big step foward in legibility in the F18 cockpit.   Great thing being that Headset wont destroy the bank!

How much is the HP thing?

I’m going in for a valve index (I’m on the reserve list), but I’m not likely to see it until September.

Will be my first VR.....

Today I bought a Rift S with option of returning it. Cost €449. My HP Reverb is on order.  I've got an option for an Valve Index.

Rift S: First impressions particular to DCS World,
 * Inside out tracking works flawless. No external sensors needed.
 * Resolution, able to read digital displays on the F-18C, cockpit panel text. This is HUGE for DCS world!!
 --> GREATLY improvement over the HTC Vive!!
 * No more freezes, no frame drops, super smooth compared to my HTC Vive.
 * Screendoor - doesnt bother me. Didnt notice it.
 * God-rays - none, if any atall,
 * Integrated 3D audio works well, sounds tinny, can be heard by others but sound is focused on your head.
 * Spotting ground targets trucks/tanks from <>2,500m finally possible!!  >:(
 * One can flick switches, press knobs using the Touch controllers, the Vive wasnt supported in DCS.
 * Touch controllers is for me getting used to. I've been using my Vive for 99% in DCS World.
 * Negative point: My eyes get tired after a few minutes, couldbe IPD-related.
 * All my SteamVR Vive-games works flawless the Rift S.
 * Setup & install is childs play; only 2 wires, 1x displayport & 1x USB 3.0

Overall:  BUY!
After >=3yrs using a HTC Vive i can say. get the Rift S, for DCS its a game changer.

Prices;
 - Rift S: €449
 - HP Reverb Pro: €650, consumer version to be <>€550.
 - Valve Index: €560 (add another €200 for lighthouses!)

Test on my machine specs:
 - CPU: Intel i7 4790 3,8Ghz , 16GB memory
 - GFx card: Nvidia Geforce GTX98 4Gb memory
 - Disk: loaded from SSD.
 - Oculus Home requires 13,5Gb disk space on C;, cannot be moved, must be on C:  :o

I waiting for some something that will be a marked step-up from the Vive Pro. I’m not sure if the Reverb or Index will be that product. The Rift S would definitely be a step backwards in my opinion.

I should've received my reverb on Friday already but didnt, so I bought the Rift S today and can return it within 30 days AND get full refund :P :P..  Which gives opportunity to test it out.

The Reverb is king in resolution with 2x 2160x2160 per eye.  Hope to receive it this week and report back.
Your

The Rift S would definitely be a step backwards in my opinion.

The Vive Pro and Valve Index are equal on resolution, and indeed for you a step back.
I figure you could easily get <>5yrs use total from your Vive Pro.

I’ve got an Index on order but no idea when I’ll receive it at the moment.

The FOV beats the reverb whilst still having very good resolution, so that’s the one I’ve opted for...

As for FOV if your eyes goes of the center, the image gets gets less blurry than on the Vive.
The Index looks nice, from outside :).

I've got an Index on backorder too, without obligation to buy.

Yesterday I was flying a Su-25 and could spot parked trucks from 4,500m distance <>5km using the Rift S.  Previously impossible with the HTC Vive. Since the INdex has a highter res this could bring VR really close into the realm of 'beinge there'.
The 3d binaural sound on the Rift S is tinny, but really immersive as theres no physical thins on / in your ears giving a greater sence of in the moment.  The Index has its sound suspended just off your ears, so i'm betting its gonna be reaaaaly cool.

The microphone on the Rift S must be really bad as well because we couldn’t hear you on Discord or SRS 😉
