Teamspeak vs Discord
« on: January 20, 2018, 01:53:44 PM »
I wanna suggest. Lets drop Teamspeak in favor of Discord.

159th discord server --> https://discord.gg/mcAwWEw

Its got Teamspeak features PLUS;
 - OFFLINE messagaging.
 - NO INSTALL requied. Runs in the browser.
 - Complete chat history.
 - Ability to share files in chat.
 - Private channels.
 - Voice-only channels.
 - Voice & text channels.
 - Once-of invites.
 - No hosting required -- thus always available, in case of 159th server disaster.

Disadvantages;
 - SimpleRadio for DCS not supported.
 - Cannot host local own server.

Tbh I agree - I’ve used discord before and was wondering why we hadn’t made the transition already.  Maybe we should have a test session then a vote?

To give Papps his credit he has been pushing Discord for ages -but as no-one else had said 'ooh yes we must do this' I hadn't much looked at it.

Seeing as there are 2 trusted people now supporting it I would 100% like it looked at.

I will give it a look over this weekend, if other squaddies could proffer their opinions -if they have any- please do so.

Thx Papps for originally raising this.  8)

The 159th has been using teamspeak for like, 12 years now.
Isnt it time to move on with the times.

Discord is a leap forward.
I was reluctant at first. Its a cross between ole' IRC-chat + skype + teamspeak.

Its only gonna work if every1 joins Discord. Archer was granted sysadmin rights.

Papps -we need to prove it will do everything that we need first.

It looks simpler that TS at first look -but still I couldn't get a PTT set up that worked -if we can get past that and any other possible hurdles, we can take it on.

Perhaps best if we can get 3 or 4 of us on it and study it -unless anyone out there knows it well enough to advise us?

BTW we would need it to be accessable for non-squad use when people are on our dedi -we would need a link where people can just click on and get on to use -does Discord allow that?

Maybe Papps can post up an easy set up guide for users. Including key binds for channels and PTT. It would certainly help those who have little to no experience with the software.

The only problem with Discord is it doesn't offer Whispers or whisper lists, but since you guys rarely use whispers, discord is fine.

@Arch, there is a PTT function. On the left-hand side, look for Voice and Video, in that there is a PTT setting which allows you to press a key to activate it.

Hi Kunz -yeah I did spot that, but when I was on with Papps, I couldn't get it to 'work' in that Papps couldn't hear me (and vice-versa). Unlike TS you don't appear to have any indication when you're 'active', and with TS there were tools to adjust things which Disc doesn't appear to have?

As it stands, I am not against it at all -but haven't as yet seen that it works easily.

I just clicked on Papps link, and find nothing there. Does this mean that any particular server will only work when the 'owner' is on it?

What the squad will need is a 24/7 open server as per TS.

ok I've registered ad set up - seems pretty straight forward.
At least it sees my push to talk button directly .. so a big plus to start with
No doubt will have to tweak some once I start talking ...
nice video facility too.
looking good so far.
I'm using the app interface not the browser.

Can you give me a quick run through on what you did SG please? Papps tried to get me set-up, but we stalled at one point when I couldn't get a PTT to work and got no further.

I've got a problem with  my mic. Its not working. Windows 10 has an issue with too many USB devices connected, which seems to be thge problem.Thats partially why PTT didnt work.

Maybe Papps can post up an easy set up guide for users. Including key binds for channels and PTT. It would certainly help those who have little to no experience with the software.

To add key shortcuts;
1. Lefthand below, click on your user, select the cogweel settings,
2. Below Discord Nitro, in Settings, choose Keybord shortcuts.
3. Choose action Push to talk, and set your keycombo.

We must try and get together and work out if discord will do what we need. If we can get a day and time when as many as possible can attend, that would be handy -perhaps realistically next Sat or Sun before the flight?
