New email set up

I am looking at setting up a new email address etc to enable me to move from being tied to my existing BB provider without losing my email service.

I know of gmail and outlook but SG recommended Thunderbird -had a look at this but they only offered a new email address with a fee (admittedly small).

Can one assemble a free and durable email address which will work through TB?
